Sources familiar with iOS 18 development suggest that the upcoming update will extend Dark Mode to include the iPhone’s Home Screen app icons. Dark Mode, introduced with iOS 13, currently darkens elements like the dock and folders. With iOS 18, app icons will automatically adopt a dark or black tint when Dark Mode is enabled. Initially, this feature will be limited to Apple’s built-in apps, but there may be an API for third-party apps to support it.
This change is expected to provide a more cohesive Dark Mode experience, especially when paired with a dark wallpaper, giving the Home Screen a fully immersive dark theme.
Mark Gurman from Bloomberg also mentioned that iOS 18 will introduce the ability for users to change the colors of app icons, which is related to this new dark tint feature.
Another recent leak suggests that iOS 18 will allow users to lock individual apps using Face ID for the first time.
Apple is set to unveil iOS 18 during its WWDC keynote on Monday. The first beta version of iOS 18 will likely be released to members of the Apple Developer Program immediately after the keynote, with the public release expected in September.
